Comments

Profile portrait bust of the composer relief carved in wood and identified below as "J. Haydn." Acquired from a Dorset, UK estate and probably of English origin. By an anonymous artist, late 18th century or early 19th century and possibly based on the 1794 profile portraits by George Dance (Somfai, "Haydn: His Life in Pictures," p. 214). 13.5 cm in diameter.
Haydn visited London for two lengthy periods during 1791-92 and 1794-95 and it is possible that this portrait dates from one of these visits.
