GREGORI I (G-77)

c. 540, Rome, Eastern Roman Empire – 12/03/604, same place

Roman Pope 590-604. The mainstream form of Western plainchant, standardized in the late 9th century, was attributed to him and so took the name of Gregorian chant. Later medieval tradition attributed the authorship of most of the hymns of the Roman liturgy to Gregor I, although his role was apparently limited only to the canonization of liturgical usage, possibly antiphonary.
