Dutch conductor and organist. After completing Amsterdam conservatory in 1904, he entered the church of the town of Oudekerk an der Amstel as an organist. He spent 10 years as the second conductor of the Concertgebouw Orchestra. In the orchestra, Cornelis gradually took a prominent place, actually being responsible for the newest repertoire, which Mengelberg was less interested in. In 1922 he was invited to lead the Utrecht Municipal Orchestra. Along with his work in Utrecht, Cornelis became the head of the Netherlands Bach Society in 1927 and together with him, for the first time in the Netherlands, performed a complete edition of the Matthew Passion.
