Belgian dramatic tenor who was closely identified with the Wagnerian repertoire. He was awarded several civic honors: Chevalier de la Légion d'honneur, orders of Léopold de Belgique, François-Joseph d'Autriche, and Saint-Stanislas de Russie, the lion de Zaeringhen, of Baden, the star of Romania. In 1887 he performed the role of Lohengrin at the French premiere of the opera in Paris. In 1888 he sang the part of Parsifal at the Bayreuth Festival. In 1888-98 he was a soloist at the Vienna Opera, where he participated in the world premiere of Werther (the title role). He performed at the Metropolitan Opera (1898-1902, debut in the role of Tannhauser). He sang on the stage of Covent Garden from 1891, was an entrepreneur in the German troupe of this theater (1907). He became famous as a leading performer of Wagnerian parts (Siegfried in The Ring of the Nibelung, Tristan, etc.). Toured in Russia (since 1900). Performed concerts.
