Latvian singer (tenor), pedagogue and stage director. He played the leading role in the development of Latvian opera theatre. In 1908-1919 he lived in Germany, Denmark and Sweden returning to his motherland in 1919. Until 1928 he was the leading performer in Latvian National Theatre. From 1940 he taught at the Riga conservatory and was the head of National Theatre in 1944-1949.
